A resurgence in Australia of 'street malls' and a focus on streets and walkability is forcing shopping malls to rethink their place.
Establishing a walkable network of streets and a focus on integration with the surrounding environment are the antithesis of the ‘big box’ approach of older malls.
Some newer destinations like Robina Town Center on the Gold Coast are an old mall in a new disguise. Cities could influence new development and the retrofitting of older shopping centres through planning controls to add residences and offices on top and between planned shopping area expansion.
