Innovation hub and rezoning - Mermaid Beach

From Idea #100 to today we see a need for transformation and more attempts at supporting innovation across the Gold Coast. From Surfers Paradise to Broadbeach a line of highrises dots the highway until Mermaid Beach comes into view, showing cracks in the Gold Coast’s ‘image’.

Alex Steffen on his worldchanging blog details a type of ‘Special Innovation Zone’ to spur on urban renewal - attracting startups and business incubators and importantly mixing with the core of a city with ample assets:

  • laws set up to strip rules and regulations down to a do-no-harm minimum -  limiting liability and slashing red tape and delays

  • allow for wild deviations from existing patterns for buildings,

  • spaces where new approaches could be iterated and tested rapidly

Vancouver, B.C. has seen results in urban design from its discretionary zoning policy, and at Re:Vision Dallas a full block was offered in Texas’s third largest city as the site for a new “sustainable model for the world.”

Where cities and urban spaces and suburbs are being revalued this opportunity is for council, Griffith University, Bond University and Southern Cross to spur Mermaid Beach renewal by.locating innovative startups in an Innovation District on the cusp of the tourist strip.
